Black Phoenix Lupercalia 2014 reviews

purchased by me

Or at least seven reviews to start with!

Koito and Sashichi

BPAL says "Green tea, tobacco absolute, and agarwood."

Jammies says "This is a very delicate white tea fragrance floating on a strong supporting base of tobacco--utterly beautiful."

Geisha in a State of Rumpled Annoyance

BPAL says "French lavender, white plum blossom, white ginger, and rice wine."

Jammies says "On me, Geisha is a clean, sharp lavender.  None of the other notes even make a brief appearance.  I have other lavender scents I like more.

Treasure Ship Coming In

BPAL says "King mandarin, passionfruit, Moroccan rose absolute, labdanum, and amber musk."

Jammies says "I was so excited with the initial sniff of effervescent orange zest, both tart and fizzy at the same time.  Sadly, it dried down to a soft rose, albeit a rose very faintly scented with orange."

Wood Horse

BPAL says "Peony, China’s national flower, with bamboo for flexibility, plum blossom for perseverance, courage, and hope, tangerine for wealth, orange for happiness, lychee for household peace, pine resin for constancy, golden kumquat and pomelo for prosperity, narcissus and King mandarin for good fortune, cypress for longevity, sticky rice cakes for abundance and hopes for a rich, sweet life, and a splash of blazing red of dragon’s blood."

Jammies says "Initially the lychee is very prominent, with the kumquat close behind it.  As it dries down, the peony comes out more, and then it becomes an exotic fruity floral."

A Demonstration of Affectionate Excitement

BPAL says "White frankincense, ho wood, Himalayan cedar, sweet myrrh, beeswax, and bamboo."

Jammies says "At first this is overwhelmingly cedar, but the resins sneak in and make it a little spicy and there's a faint pine note in the drydown.  No noticeable beeswax, alas."

Death Shall Come in with Thee

BPAL says "Opium poppy, smoke, and tar with green cognac, brittle white vanilla pod, white sandalwood, and clove bud."

Jammies says "Mostly smoky vanilla, but I get the tiniest whiff of clove.  Not really a surprise, since my skin amps vanilla, but I was hoping the clove would hold out.  Le sigh."

Weeping Faces of Wearied Loves

BPAL says "Oman frankincense, grape flowers, sweet myrrh, black currant bud, and Haitian vetiver stained by red wine."

Jammies says "On me, this is very sweet currant with a tiny floral note.  I wish the currant were a bit tarter."
